Mykonos Town: an easy walking route (and tips so you don’t get lost)

A simple, scenic walking route through Mykonos Town: Windmills, Little Venice, Kastro & Paraportiani, the old harbour (Yialos) and Matogianni — plus the best times to go and practical tips.
Mykonos Town (Chora) is one of the most iconic places on the island — and the best way to enjoy it is on foot.
The charming lanes are part of the magic, but they can also make it easy to lose your sense of direction. That’s why we suggest a simple walking “loop” that covers the highlights, without stress.

Good to know: inside Chora, cars and scooters are not allowed, so walking is the natural way to explore.

Getting to Mykonos Town from Agios Ioannis

If you’re staying in Agios Ioannis, getting to Town is very easy: the local bus connects Agios Ioannis with Fabrika (a convenient drop-off point close to major sights).
If you’re visiting with a rental car, you can park outside the centre and walk in (parking areas vary by season and availability).

The easy walking route (step-by-step)

Start: Fabrika → head west towards the Windmills
1. The Windmills
A classic Mykonos landmark and one of the best viewpoints. Many guests love coming here around sunset, but it’s also beautiful in the morning.
2. Little Venice (Alefkandra)
From the Windmills, walk downhill towards the sea and you’ll reach Little Venice. It’s a must-see area with sea views, colourful buildings and a great atmosphere.
3. Kastro area & Paraportiani Church
Very close to Little Venice you’ll find the Kastro area, with narrow lanes and a unique feel.
Don’t miss Paraportiani, the most famous white church in Mykonos. It’s often closed inside, but it’s absolutely worth visiting for photos and the scenery around it.
4. Seafront walk to Yialos (Old Harbour area)
Continue along the sea, heading north, and you’ll reach Yialos. It’s a traditional meeting spot for locals, with cafés and small places to stop for a drink or a bite.
5. Matogianni (shopping streets) + the “maze” lanes
From Yialos, walk into the centre and explore Matogianni and the surrounding lanes. You’ll find everything from boutiques and souvenirs to small hidden corners that feel like “classic” Mykonos.

Museums (optional, if you enjoy culture)

If you’re interested in museums, Mykonos Town has a few options (opening days/hours can vary by season), including the Archaeological Museum near the old harbour area, plus smaller local museums.

Best time to visit (it really depends on what you want)
• Morning: calmer, brighter for photos, easier walking
• Late afternoon / sunset: the most atmospheric — but also the busiest
• Evening & night: lively dining and bar scene; the Town stays active very late

In high season, the Town can feel especially busy — and cruise ship days usually mean more crowds.

Practical tips (so you don’t get lost or stressed)
• Use this route as your “anchor”, then feel free to wander — you’ll always find your way back to a landmark.
• Signs aren’t always obvious, so don’t rely only on GPS in the tiny lanes.
• Check menus and prices before sitting down (most places display menus outside).
• Wear comfortable shoes — you’ll walk more than you think.
